THE FABELIST

JOINING THE FABELIST

"The Fabelist is a community of artists, performers and writers that: Exposes the PROCESS behind finished pieces, forges PARTNERSHIPS between disciplines, enables PROJECTS that share this method and, at all times, encourages PROGRESS."

The Fabelist gorup puts together an exhibition every four Months based on a central theme. The current theme is Imprint. I'm collaborating with fellow artist Nicola Anthony. In the words of Francesca Nell Goodwin, director of The Fabelist group:

"THIS IS WHAT WE DO!! Fantastic collaborative work done today by Nicola Anthony and Abigail Box. They've been brainstorming together for an imprint project, based around their respectively chaotic diaries and reflections on time passing. As the Christmas lights flicker into life and, the last leaves of autumn bid their adieus to spindly branches this is a very apt and well considered team effort. For inspiration check out their ideas here... http://www.thefabelist.com/2011/11/collaborating-ideas-abigail-box-nicola-anthony/

As well as the four month projects we also organise pop up events which bring art into the community. The next pop up event is the second 'breaking bindings' event. It will be on the 8th December at Alfies Antiques in Marylebone. We will be inviting both children and adults to take part in 'A Story A Day' where we will continue last months efforts in making illustrations for a story book.

"We will be working on the art book during the day and then celebrating its completion and all of your lovely submissions with their late night opening and cocktail evening. It would be great if everyone could come and support the event or, come for a social afterwards."

EMERGING LONDON | Identity Gallery, Hong Kong

I'll be showing three pieces of work with Identity Gallery from the beginning of August

Update: The Exhibition opening is set to be on the 3rd Aug and will also include work by Aidan Doherty, Chris Baker, Roxy Topia and Paddy Gould. For more information: Emerging London

"In a bid to bring on a burgeoning slice of British art scene to Hong Kong, Identity Art Gallery is pleased to present Emerging London, a joint exhibition showcasing oil paintings and mixed media collages by an exciting group of London-based artists, Chris Baker, Abigail Box, Aidan Doherty, Roxy Topia and Paddy Gould.

Emerging London brings together five early to mid-career on the up artists who share a gutsy fascination for colourful and optimistic presentation styles. Balancing links to interior fantasy and external culture, from pop to art, these award-winning art stars-to-be revel in stripping images, patterns and textures of their context, and giving them new lives as brave and original artistic expressions. In this forward and vibrant showcase of paintings and mix media collages, serious dialogues with art history appears alongside absurd, whimsical reflections of fleeting and often inconsequential moments, all represent future names to watch as the five young artists seek to broaden their contemporary repertoire."

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | DEBUT Contemporary

"Abigail box's oil paintings have a strong and fulfilling prescence here in the gallery, the canvas is alive with colours and texture from her collages depicting various exotic animals being placed in human environments. These curious scenarios provoke a fresh and inquisitive perspective exploring the contradictory emotions; a sense of belonging alined with feeling displaced.

Abigail uses these deep and profound questions as a base, but uses bright and bold colours to depict them, giving a warm, comfortable aesthetic that makes it easy to see why her paintings are so popular!"

LOOKING AROUND | Zurich

Deer Park private view, work by Erik Van Der Weijde at Wascherei Gallery

Sculpture Now at Eva Presenhuber Gallery - amazing space and exhibition. Particularly liked seeing the work of Matias Faldbakken, Urs Fischer, Steven Shearer and Peter Fischli/David Weiss.

Went to the open air cinema which is projected over the river

Visited the Hernan Bas exhibition at the Peter Kilchmann Gallery and also the Saadane Afif exhibition at the RaebervonStenglin Gallery. Currently sat in an office space that overlooks Hardbrucke Station and all of the industrial development going on in the area. Loads of my favorite things, building sites, trains, dull weather, tower blocks, building men in high-vis jackets, cranes!

Spend the weekend exploring Zuich and sitting by the lake feeding the swans and went for a swim up to the sculpture like water fountain Jet d'eau. Walked by the Louise Bourgeois sculpture, Maman. Visited the Fraumunster, home to several stunning stain glass windows by Marc Chagall.

oneforone is the first exhibition for a group of artists engaged in a discourse on change and transition - the need for the artist to adapt to change; the transition of one artist's inspiration into a work by another. 18 diverse artists working in performance to painting, installation to sculptural photography, have been challenged to create a new work in response to a stimulus provided anonymously by a fellow artist; the artist...s in oneforone are asking themselves and each other to react to material, to opportunity, to transformation. oneforone is not about working in or with the familiar; it is about revelling in the change which accompanies exchange.

In the battle of change, oneforone proves the artist's greatest weapons are resourcefulness, versatility and urgency.

A REALITY OF THEIR OWN | Review of the opening night

EXHIBITION OPEN | 03 - 31 MARCH 2011

[click to see photographs of the exhibition space]

Review of the opening night

To say that the opening night of 'A reality of Their Own' by up and coming artist Abigail Box was well received is an understatement. Guests were treated to drinks as well as an atmosphere that surrounded the street.

Over a thousand art lovers flocked through the doors of the Degree Art.com gallery, to view the large canvases themed with indoor-outdoor imagery. Paintings that clearly Box has poured her heart into for her first solo show, producing work of substance over quantity (although the latter is not lacked).

The portrayals of animal's wandering into human environments 'feeling a sense of belonging and displacement' which makes the audience question how true that statement is. Such is the urban environment that Box has translated through all of her work, she questions who is invading who? The colourful and accomplished 'Sofa So Good' (2011) featuring two polar bears seated majestically on a red floral sofa does this greatly, the painting offset by a block off light florescent pink show a signature that Box is not afraid to play with.

Box quotes "There is a point where in the mystery of existence contradictions meet." Through this quote Box has tied together an evening of both visually and mentally stimulating imagery as seen in her signature piece below, she is not afraid to toy with such matters of existence.

Much of her series could be seen hanging on many walls soon, a successful night of true appreciation, which has already started murmurs for an encore.

'A REALITY OF THEIR OWN'
New Work by Abigail Box

12a Vyner Street, London, E2 9DG
3rd - 31st March 2011 12-6pm DAILY
Private View Thursday 3 rd March 2011 6-9pm, R.S.V.P. vj@DegreeArt.com

A Reality of their Own is not only an iridescent-like juxtaposition of imagery, but also an examination of the spectator vs. the visual vs. our known reality.

Abigail Box's recent work forms part of her ongoing exploration into the curiousness of existence and toys with the contradiction involved in feeling both a sense of belonging and displaced.

These visual analogies are harmoniously presented and allow the spectators to ask themselves questions regarding their affiliations with their space, cohabitants and themselves.

A Reality of their Own catalyzes this experience by introducing wild animals into a series of human environments to provoke a fresh and inquisitive perspective onto something familiar. Attempting to reflect on our everyday surroundings along with our conventions and behaviour and in part making us feel outside what we consider our own space.

The work approaches the difficulties associated with confronting and comprehending our own reality through a remarkably captivating blend of painterly techniques and collaging of found imagery.

11 - 12 DEC 2010

A weekend residencie in Roubaix, Lille: 24 hours, non-stop, live creation of re-using and recycling objects, in the presence of 150 international artists

A crazy weekend! An epic 34 hours making work along side 150 other international artists and designers in Roubaix. During which time the doors were open for 24 hours to the public, super busy, people would ask questions, take photos and buy work. I've really enjoyed making work that is outside of my usual art practice, the work was very dependent on the materials to hand and the surrounding environment, working alongside so many other artists and designers was incredible

Camberwell College of Art graduate Abigail Box talks to jotta about showcasing her work in the upcoming jotta exhibition Into the Wilde. Her vivid paintings use neon hues, accentuating the bizarre placement of wild animals among modern interior settings, “a conscious decision for my paintings to be an escape from real life rather than be about it.”

Currated by Ann Harezlak | Jotta

"jottaContemporary presents an exhibition exploring the relationship between aestheticism and corruption, where the enchantment of decadence reveals undertones of perverse animal instinct and deviant beauty. Drawing inspiration from the themes of a classic Victorian fiction by Oscar Wilde, the group show interrogates ‘the artist as creator of beautiful things’ where ‘vice and virtue are the artist’s materials’. Spectators fueling their aesthetic urges for ‘surface and symbol’ in the Upper Rockwell will hesitantly discover hidden below the surface, in the Lower Rockwell, a complex and cautionary tale of exceptional beauty."
